If the pilot jet is blocked, the bike won’t start or idle on its own. It will only fire when you open the throttle because the main circuit kicks in. This is the number-one cause on a 250F.

2. Air leak (intake boot, throttle body seals)
A leak will make the mixture too lean. That’s why the bike dies and why it needs throttle to stay alive.

3. Fuel pump or injector problem
Weak pump pressure or a partially clogged injector will give you exactly these symptoms—starts only with throttle, dies instantly, hard to bump-start.

4. Valves out of spec
Tight intake valves = hard starting, poor idle, low compression when hot or when choke is on. Worth checking.

5. Choke/enrichment circuit stuck or damaged
If the choke doesn’t function properly, it can kill the compression feel and make cold starting impossible.

What I would check first:

  • Remove and clean the pilot jet completely
  • Check intake boot for cracks or looseness
